What's so important about a name? People seem to get upset if you don't have one. I do not, but I have no need for one. My purpose has been served, and I am a mere doll. A doll doesn't get a real name, just a role.

Why are names so important? Why? Why is it not okay that I don't have one? I'm a doll. I don't need one. I don' even exist.

I'm not important.

Am I?

If you're capable of speaking and considering your own existence to have this crisis, then you are a person, you obviously exist or you wouldn't be writing right now, and a name is a perfectly reasonable thing to have.

A person wouldn't be left behind in an empty world. I'm just a facsimile of one. I have to be.

I am going to have to take personal offense to that, considering my own existence.

I only have a name because the project that created me had a name.

I cannot even claim that.

I am a doll, given a Role in a Play. Nothing else.

But it's nice not being the only one.

Of course you're important. You're alive. Doesn't matter if you were born to a role, or if you've completed that purpose. You're still here. That's all that matters. And since you're here, a name is something you should have. It's a special thing that's yours. Because even if you can't own anything else in a world, you should be able to have your own name.

[His hand-writing is still pretty readable and almost neat, but it comes through in a rush, because hi he feels rather strongly about this]

So what? It doesn't matter. You haven't. So everything that 'should' be, doesn't matter anymore. Because you're still here. Things might've gone one way on your world, but here, the rules change. Things change. You're your own person.

Asch doesn't like replicas, or anything like them. And there seem to be a number of them here, which sets his hackles up, and he doesn't know who any of them are because the handwriting is anonymous.]

A name distinguishes you from others. If there was someone born in the same way as you, people would want a way to tell you apart.

Perhaps we should find a name for the lost little doll - something to give a definition of self.

[There's a patch under it with messy scribbles where it's like he's trying to write with something interfering horribly with his pen; somewhere outside on a weird corner of the town wall Spade is throwing all four pounds of feather and claws that he is now at Mukuro's hand, having an argument to the tune of "THAT'S NOT A NAME" "OH LIKE YOU WOULD DO ANY BETTER".]

[On the surface, it might seem like Asch is trying to say that giving her a name that belonged to someone else might hinder her developing sense of self. Really, he's just angry about his own problems.]

Does it really differentiate you from others if it's only a designation of what project and experiment series led to your creation?

You do not need a name to exist but it looks like people are going to give you one anyway. Don't worry about it. It's convenient for them.

Well, even if you don't think that you need one, it's something that people are used to. And we tend to consider it rude to just shout 'Hey, you!' at others around us.

I've been in this place before and...I don't think it pulls people here that aren't important. To somebody, at least.

Names are a way of showing that thought was put into your existence. That is why they are important, and I'm fairly sure that's why other people are upset when they find out you were never given one.

Do names that are only the name of the project that birthed you count?

It makes me think that more thought was put into the project that birthed you than you. I wouldn't count it.

[It sounded like something done out of convenience rather than any thought for the person. Like affixing a label instead of really naming something.]

I don't understand. I don't understand. Why does anyone care? I'm just a doll. I'm made to be tossed aside. I should't be cared about to this degree. I don't understand.

I care because if I accepted that kind of logic, I would've lost my brother long ago. He believed he was born to protect me, and once I no longer needed him, he'd die. That's why I care, because I believe there's more to life than just fulfilling some purpose that's set for you. No-one should be just tossed aside in the end.

I'm sorry. This is new to me. I don't know what I should do. Everything was simple before.

Just because someone wants you to fulfill one purpose doesn't mean you have to. You're your own person no matter what.
