Day 14

I'm not sure what happened last night, but it seems like a lot of people aren't feeling good about it. And I've been kind of out of the loop with things lately, so I was trying to think of a way that might help cheer everyone up as well as maybe get together with people again.

It's getting colder, so it made me think of something. Back home, around the end of the year in the colder months (at least it's cold then in the part of the world I'm from), there's a holiday called Christmas. It's basically a time that everyone gets together with family and friends and exchanges presents with them.

Maybe we could do that here? Have it on the next Day, so people can get ready for it and the like. Everyone could come to the town for it, if the townsfolk don't mind. It could be like a festival.

[ No-one knew because no-one ever asked, and Kaito had no reason to make it public. Which was a shame, really. ]

Yeah! That's why I offered. I haven't done a show in ages.

[ If the intent was to give him something to do, planning a show was definitely one way to achieve that. Kaito grinned at Walter and made a copper coin appear and flip over his knuckles. ]

[Ah, the coin. Kaito had done something like that before, when they had first met.

A smile stretched at his lips.]

Well, then it appears you'll at last have a chance to shine in the spotlight.

[ He snickered, pleased. The coin spun and vanished behind a knuckle. ]

Tell me something you want to see. The more impossible, the better.

Hm. [He paused with knife in hand, thinking it over. The more impossible the better, he said.]

I want to see... your show make the whole town smile. How is that?

[ He stared at Walter in shock. Whenever he'd posed that question to people, they'd always thrown back typical things: make this disappear, pull a dove out of my sleeve, predict what I'm thinking, etc. A sledge of standard tricks Kaito could do easy as breathing, with the occasional high-and-mighty clever cookie offering a challenge he always gladly took up. But no-one had told him something like this before.

In time, a wide smile spread across his face. Pure, distilled happiness. ]

I accept your challenge. [ He sprang from his chair and headed right for the rosebush, ushering it over so he could head to his assigned room in the bunker. He needed his equipment, stat. ]

No peeking in my room from now until the next day! [ This thrown over his shoulder. ]

[At first, Walter thought he might have somehow broken the boy mentally. But as silent staring gave way to a beaming smile, Walter amended that thought to 'stunned temporarily speechless'.

Why it was so, he didn't know. But before he could ask, Kaito was up out of his seat and going, going, and nearly already gone.]

...Sounds fair enough.
